In my quest of discovering Baguio’s bestsellers, I found myself in one of the hip places in General Luna Road area. I didn’t consider dropping by on this part of Baguio City in the past since I only pass through the area when going to Mines View or Wright Park.

Slow-Cooked Pork Ribs (Php 250++) available at Backyard Baguio.

On my previous visits to the city, I’ve noticed that it is already a food strip having a quite number of restaurants offering a variety of gastronomic fares. 50’s Diner is probably the most famous one here but I decided to try the restaurant adjacent to it, Backyard Baguio.

I was starving coming from a cosmic journey at Maryknoll Ecological Sanctuary and at the Bamboo Art Museum so I decided to order a rice meal. I went over their menu which was classified into starters, soups, salads, sandwiches and tacos, meat, pasta, Filipino favorites, desserts, and rice meals.

Cozy interior design of the restaurant.

A crew informed me that Chicken ala Kiev (Php 215) is a must-try on their list. So I gave him the final hint of getting one. Afterwards, he approached me and said that the item was not available and instead of having the Slow-Cooked Pork Ribs (Php 250) as an option.

While waiting for my order, I noticed the lighting fixtures used and the way the dining tables were arranged that made the dining halls look larger enough to accommodate an ample number of guests.

Lighting and proper arrangement of tables make the place looks large.

Meanwhile, my order came earlier than expected. The size of the meat, I think, was considerable for its price that made me excited for the food experience. The pork ribs came with rice and stir-fried vegetables. There was no dip so I asked the crew and informed me that the meal has really no dip. So, I asked for a mayonnaise.

I started to chomp on the meat and was sickened by the thick layer of fat with the meat’s oil really dripping as you slice through the pork. In addition, the pork skin was also tough to chew. The entire meal was not enjoying that I tasted oil most of the time. A hint of a curry flavor was felt in consuming the meal.

There are still a lot to improve on this.

The Slow-Cooked Pork Ribs failed to impress me. They still have a lot of rooms for improving the dish. I will just try other items on their menu on my next visit. And another not-so-good-experience, they add a 10% service charge on your bill.
